About The Bug Farms
The Bug Farms Ltd., is currently a company that breeds insects; namely Mealworms, Crickets and Black Soldier Fly Larvae, on a small scale. Insects, including crickets, are omnivores and can feed on rotten vegetables and fruits, a readily available and cheap source of food. This allows The Bug Farms to feed their insects with the waste product of other industries such as apples, peaches and grapes and peelings from local restaurants.
The Bug Farms company is based in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Kelowna is a strategically advantageous place to develop an expanding business that targets the food waste industry, due to the abundant numbers of winery’s, vineyards, orchards, restaurants and market places located within the local area
The Bug Farms breeds premium quality insects. Insects are omnivores and can feed on organic waste, including vegetables and fruits, a readily available and cheap source of food. This allows The Bug Farms to feed their insects with a high quality food product that would be the waste of other industries. Our farms are strategically placed to develop an expanding business that targets the food waste industry, due to the abundant numbers of winery’s, vineyards, orchards, restaurants and market places located within the local area. Currently the business is a small scale producer, and the insects are sold to private buyers, pet stores, wildlife and zoo parks.
"The main goal of The Bug Farms is
to be a sustainable business; an enterprise that has minimal negative impact, or potentially a positive effect, on the global or local environment, community, society, or economy—a business that strives to meet the triple bottom line".
The Need to Dispose of Food Waste
One third of food produced globally is wasted leading to significant environmental and economic damage, using food waste as feed for insects can be a way to make better use of scarce global resources. Across North America, 170 million tonnes of food produced for human consumption are lost and wasted—across the food supply chain, including in pre-harvest and consumer sectors—each year.
The average Canadian consumer throws out approximately 170 kg of food per year – waste which could be used to produce additional protein for feed through insect farming.
In B.C., organic waste currently represents 40% of material sent to landfill sites. In turn, as this material decomposes, it generates a significant level of greenhouse gases which increases global warming and contributes to climate change. This material could potentially be a source of feedstock for insect production.
Our MissionThe Bug Farms is invested in and committed to reducing food waste, reducing waste disposal at landfill sites, in turn reducing greenhouse gases and providing a high protein, low expense food source that fits the values of today’s economical, ethical and moral world.
Insects can be produced for human consumption or as a protein source into feedstock mixtures. They also emit fewer greenhouse gases and ammonia than conventional livestock and can be grown on organic waste.

‘Provide insects and insect products that are truly sustainable and have minimal negative impact, on the local environment, community, society, and economy’.
‘Provide insects and insect products that are truly sustainable and have minimal negative impact, on the local environment, community, society, and economy’.
Size Doesn't MatterAlthough they are small the demand for micro farming or production and consumption of insects is increasing due to their high nutritional value and low risk of transmitting diseases. Insects contain more protein and low fat compared to traditional meats, such as poultry and livestock.
